Who is responsible for Fire Safety within your Premises?

If you are in overall day to day control of the premises in which you work then under the new fire legislation you are the responsible person for fire safety.

Do I need a Fire Risk Assessment?

The new legislation covers every type of business premises. If you are the owner, employer or occupier then you are classed as the responsible person and therefore the duty of care falls upon you to ensure that you have a competent person to conduct your fire risk assessment. Does a Risk Assessment need to be written down?

If you employee more than 5 members of staff then yes the risk assessment needs to be written down so that it can be viewed by the fire & rescue services.

Can I conduct my own fire risk assessment?

Yes, you can undertake your own fire risk assessment but the legislation recognises that most business will not have the necessary experience or knowledge to be able to do this to a suitable & sufficient standard. Finding someone in your business who is competent to the task and who has the time available can often be extremely difficult.

Does my Fire Risk Assessment need to be reviewed every twelve months?

In order for a fire risk assessment to comply with the new legislation it must be kept up to date and reviewed on a regular basis. If anything in your organisation changes or you feel that it is no longer valid then you need to get it reviewed straight away.
